Polycarbonate Roofing Sheets

Which polycarbonate thickness is most suitable for a small greenhouse versus a conservatory?

For a small greenhouse, 4mm or 6mm twinwall is the usual choice: 4mm lets in about 82% of the light and keeps the frame lightly loaded. For a conservatory you sit in year round, choose 25mm or thicker, with 35mm giving the best insulation. A 16mm sheet suits a lean-to or canopy between the two.

How does light transmission vary between clear, bronze and opal roofing sheets?

Clear passes the most light, bronze far less, and opal usually the least. In 16mm, clear lets through about 76% and bronze about 35%. At 25mm, clear drops to about 62%, bronze to about 25% and opal to about 15%. Thicker sheets pass less light whatever the tint, so choose the thickness first, then the colour.

Are polycarbonate roofing sheets available in corrugated as well as flat profiles?

Yes. This category covers flat twinwall and multiwall sheets from 4mm to 35mm, which sit in glazing bars on conservatories, lean-tos and greenhouses. Corrugated polycarbonate is sold separately as Suntuf sheets in our Corrugated Polycarbonate Roofing Sheets category. Those suit carports, pergolas and outbuildings, where the sheets overlap and screw straight down to purlins.

What structural difference is there between twinwall and multiwall sheets?

A twinwall sheet has two skins with ribs between them, forming a single row of air channels. Multiwall adds more skins and more layers of air. Our 16mm is a three-wall sheet, 25mm uses a three-wall X structure, and 32mm and 35mm are seven-wall box structures. More walls trap more air, so the sheet insulates better but passes less light.

Can polycarbonate roofing sheets be cut to a custom size before delivery?

Yes. We cut 10mm to 35mm sheets to your width and length from stock up to 2100mm by 7000mm, to a tolerance of plus or minus 5mm. Measure your rafter centres and sheet length carefully before ordering, because cut-to-size sheets are bespoke and cannot be returned. We can also tape the cut ends for you on request.
