Abrasion Resistant Polycarbonate

What does the hard-coated finish protect against compared with standard solid sheet?

The hard coating protects against scratching, which is the main weakness of standard polycarbonate. Plain solid sheet is far tougher than glass but marks more easily; Palgard's coating keeps it clear through cleaning, handling and everyday knocks. It also resists a wider range of chemicals, so graffiti and cleaning products are less likely to damage it. Note that cut edges are not coated.

Is this material designed with vandalism and graffiti resistance in mind?

Yes. Palgard was developed for anti-vandal glazing: bus shelters, machine guards, sound barriers, secure windows and public buildings where standard polycarbonate would soon look scratched and cloudy. The hard coat resists scratching, graffiti and many solvents, so paint and marker can usually be cleaned off without dulling the surface. It keeps the impact strength of solid polycarbonate, around 200 times that of glass.

Are abrasion resistant sheets available as a cutting service, or standard sizes only?

Standard sizes online, with cutting by quotation. We sell Palgard as 2000x3000mm and 2000x1500mm standard sheets in 5mm and 8mm, and you can order those directly on the site. Cut-downs are not available online; email the sales team with your sizes and we will quote for cutting. Bear in mind the cut edges will not carry the hard coating.

What thickness range is available for the abrasion resistant range?

We stock Palgard in 5mm and 8mm. The manufacturer makes it from 1.5mm up to 12.7mm, but those two cover most uses. 5mm is the usual choice for shelters and screens where scratching is the main concern. 8mm suits security glazing and anywhere physical attack is likely; solid polycarbonate of 8mm and above does not break in the standard impact test.

Does the hard coating affect the sheet's UV blocking properties?

No. Palgard blocks 99.9% of UV, like standard solid polycarbonate, and still lets through up to about 90% of visible light. The hard coat sits on top of the sheet and adds scratch and chemical resistance without reducing clarity or UV blocking. Leave the protective film on until the sheet is fitted, and remember that cut edges are not coated.
