Glazing Bars For Glass

Are these heavy-duty bars designed to be self-supporting rather than rafter-mounted?

Yes. The bars in this category are our heavy duty self-supporting range. They span between a wall plate and an eaves beam without a timber rafter beneath, up to 4m of unsupported projection. The bars carry the roof load themselves, which is why they are a heavier section than a snapdown rafter bar. They suit experienced DIYers and professionals rather than a first roofing project.

How does a glass glazing bar differ structurally from a polycarbonate one?

A bar for glass carries far more weight. Glass units weigh about ten times as much as multiwall, so the bar needs a heavier section. Our heavy duty self-supporting bars, wall plates and eaves beams are for 16, 25, 32 and 35mm polycarbonate only, and we do not sell them for glass. A glass roof needs a rafter-based glazing system; email the sales team.

What panel thickness range are these glazing bars designed to accommodate?

These bars are designed for 16, 25, 32 and 35mm multiwall polycarbonate. The range does not go down to 10mm twinwall; for that you need a snapdown rafter bar. We do not sell them for glass units; no glass thickness is listed for them. The sheet width you can glaze depends on pitch and loading, so tell us thickness, pitch and projection when you order.

Is additional rafter support still needed when using self-supporting glazing bars?

Not within the bar's rated projection. Our heavy duty bars span up to 4m from wall plate to eaves beam with nothing beneath. Beyond 4m you need rafters or intermediate support, and the usable projection falls as pitch drops and loading rises, so check with our technical team. The wall plate and eaves beam carry the bars, so fix them to something solid.

Can glazing bars designed for glass also be used with rigid polycarbonate panels?

Yes. The heavy duty self-supporting bars on this page are in fact designed for 16, 25, 32 and 35mm multiwall polycarbonate, and that is their main use. Any bar stiff enough for glass has ample strength for polycarbonate, which weighs about a tenth as much. Use the matching edge bars, end caps and sheet closures to finish the roof.
