Onduline Bitumen Corrugated Sheets

What is the sheet material made from, and how does that affect its performance?

Onduline sheets are organic fibres, about half of them recycled, soaked in bitumen under heat and pressure. The result is a light, fully opaque sheet that resists rot, fungi and rust and contains no asbestos. It dulls rain noise better than plastic sheets, but it lets no light through and needs a boarded deck below 10 degrees pitch.

Are these sheets suitable for agricultural buildings as well as garden outbuildings?

Yes. Onduline Easyline is a small-format sheet, 760 by 1000mm and 2.3kg, so it suits sheds, summerhouses, log stores and small field shelters that one person can roof alone. Onduline sheets withstand winds of around 192 km/h when fixed correctly. For larger agricultural roofs our 950 by 2000mm Palruf BT bitumen sheet covers more area per sheet.

Does the colour-staining process affect how long the colour retention lasts?

It helps rather than hinders. Onduline colour is stained into the sheet with a UV-resistant resin during manufacture, not painted on afterwards, so it cannot peel or flake. The manufacturer describes the colour retention as excellent. The colour is designed to hold its shade, not to develop or deepen over time. Expect gradual weathering on any roof, but no bare patches.

How lightweight are bitumen corrugated sheets compared with other roofing materials?

Light enough to carry and fit single-handed. An Onduline Easyline sheet weighs 2.3kg, about 3kg per square metre, and our larger Palruf BT bitumen sheet is around 2.9kg per square metre. Corrugated polycarbonate is lighter still at roughly 1kg per square metre. Bitumen is much lighter than tile or slate, so it suits sheds and timber frames that were never built for heavy roofing.

Is the manufacturing process different from standard corrugated bitumen sheets?

Yes, in the detail. Onduline impregnates a single layer of organic fibres with bitumen under heat and pressure, with resin-bound colour stained in. Our Palruf BT sheet is a multi-layer board, multiple layers of carrier material vacuum-bituminised, with pigment bound into the surface layers so it cannot peel. Both carry a 15-year waterproofing guarantee; Palruf BT is lighter, about 2.9kg per square metre.
