Clear solid polycarbonate has around 200 times the impact strength of glass at the same thickness, which is why the manufacturer calls it virtually unbreakable. Sheets of 8mm and above do not break at all in the standard impact test. It is not harder than glass, though. The surface scratches more easily, so leave the protective film on until fitting.
Both sides, for every clear solid sheet we sell from 2mm to 12mm. This means you cannot fit the sheet the wrong way round, which is a common problem with one-sided sheets. Only the 1mm and 1.5mm sheets have UV protection on one side, and that face must point at the sun. The protection blocks almost all UV, so the sheet resists yellowing.
We stock clear solid polycarbonate from 1mm to 12mm. The 1mm and 1.5mm sheets come as standard sheets only. Everything from 2mm to 12mm is cut to your measurements, or supplied as a standard full or half sheet. Sheets of 2mm to 6mm cover most shed and greenhouse windows. For security glazing or large panels, choose 8mm and above.
No. A sheet cut to your measurements is made to order, so it cannot be returned or cancelled once we have cut it. UK consumer law exempts goods made to a customer's specification from the usual 14-day cancellation right. Your rights on faulty goods are unaffected. Measure twice before ordering, and remember our cutting tolerance is plus or minus 5mm.
Yes, clear solid polycarbonate works for skylights, canopies and window glazing as well as security panels. It lets through about 90% of light, is UV protected on both sides and is rated Class 1 for surface spread of flame. Bear in mind it insulates no better than single glass, so it suits an unheated porch or shed roof better than a living space.
