Glazing Bars For Polycarbonate

What colour finishes are available for polycarbonate glazing bars?

White, brown and grey. For 10 to 25mm sheets, Sunwood snapdown bars come in white and brown, and Exitex in white, grey and brown; both brands also make a 25 to 35mm bar. Our heavy duty self-supporting bars are white or brown. Pick the colour that matches your fascia or window frames, then order sheet closures and F-sections in the same shade.

Do these glazing bars work with both twinwall and multiwall sheet thicknesses?

Yes, as long as you pick the right bar for the sheet. The snapdown rafter bars come in two versions: one for 10 to 25mm sheets, covering 10mm twinwall and 16 and 25mm multiwall, and one for 25 to 35mm. The heavy duty self-supporting bars take 16, 25, 32 and 35mm only. Check the thickness before ordering; the cap must clamp the sheet properly.

What other accessories are typically used alongside a polycarbonate glazing bar?

Most roofs need four things beyond the bars: aluminium tape for the top edge, perforated breather tape for the bottom edge, PVC sheet closures to cover the tape and give a drip edge, and an F-section or edge bar to finish the outer sheet edges. Snapdown bars include one end cap. Fixing buttons are optional extra hold where wind or snow loading is a concern.

Is a specific minimum rafter width needed to fit these glazing bars?

Yes, 50mm for the snapdown rafter bars. The aluminium base is made to sit on a 50mm timber rafter and screw straight into it, with fixings within 100mm of each end and no more than 500mm apart. The heavy duty self-supporting bars don't need a rafter at all; they span from wall plate to eaves beam. Measure your rafters before you choose a system.

How are polycarbonate glazing bars different from those designed for glass panels?

Polycarbonate bars are lighter sections, because multiwall weighs so little. Glass weighs roughly ten times as much, so a bar carrying glass needs a heavier section. All our bars, including the heavy duty self-supporting range, are designed for polycarbonate and not sold for glass units.
