FIXING BUTTONS CONTENTS
Each pack contains 10 fixing buttons, 10 screw hole covers, and 10 foam compression gaskets. The foam compression gaskets are designed to prevent water from getting into the hole where the screw fixes the polycarbonate sheet.
Buttons are used to give additional fixing strength, particularly where wind / snow loading is a consideration. They also allow for a small amount of movement of the polycarbonate sheet due to a small amount on natural expansion and contraction of the sheets.
These are also used when an installer glazes a sheet of multiwall at centres greater than those recommended by the manufacturers. The wider sheet should then be fixed to intermediate rafters, purlins, or noggins with the buttons to give added, necessary support.
Although we supply fixing buttons, these are not a highly recommended, long-term method of securing polycarbonate glazing to a structure. Due to the natural movement of the sheet through expansion and contraction, leaking may eventually occur through the fixing button and the hole drilled in the polycarbonate. We would always prefer you to glaze to the recommended widths, using a suitable glazing bar system.
BASIC INSTALLATION ADVICE
Use a sharp steel bit instead of a wood one.
Holes should be drilled 2mm wider than the button shank to allow for sheet movement caused by thermal expansion and contraction.
Drill between the ribs where possible.
The sheet should be drilled before fitting to allow dirt, dust and swarf to be removed from the flutes.
Using a hand drill and drilling anti-clockwise can help to bring the swarf out of the sheet as you drill.
Insert the foam washer underneath the button head.
Fit the shank of the button into the prepared hole and secure with the screw.
Do not over-tighten the screw. Push the cover cap into place. You may wish to apply a small amount of silicone round the top of the screw before fixing the cap. (Please ensure that the silicone is compatible with polycarbonate.)
Buttons should be fitted at 300mm intervals and no nearer than 50mm from any cut edge of the sheet.
Buttons are not designed to take the place of glazing bars down a cut edge; the roof will leak.
